There are weddings where the atmosphere, the people and the landscape come together in a way that feels entirely their own. Kim and Dan’s celebration at Darlington Estate was one of those days.

From the energy of a room filled with loved ones to the quiet intimacy of their portraits in the Australian bush, their wedding offered a beautiful balance of connection, character and timeless imagery.

As a Perth wedding photographer, these are the celebrations I love documenting. The moments that unfold naturally, the people who make the day meaningful, and the opportunity to create photographs with a little artistic freedom.

A Celebration Surrounded by Love

Set amongst the natural beauty of the Perth Hills, Darlington Estate provided the setting for Kim and Dan’s wedding celebration.

Their ceremony began at 3:30 pm, with celebrant Andjelka Jankovic guiding them through a meaningful ceremony that included a beautiful ring warming ritual.

Before exchanging their rings, Kim and Dan invited their guests to hold and touch the wedding bands, passing them around so each person could share in the symbolism of the moment. It was a thoughtful way to bring their loved ones into the ceremony, making the exchange of rings even more personal.

Weddings are filled with traditions, but it is the personal touches that often leave the most lasting impression.

The Beauty of the Unexpected

One of the highlights of Kim and Dan’s day was heading away from the venue for some creative bush photography.

Rather than keeping every portrait within the traditional wedding setting, we drove out to explore the surrounding landscape. The bush, granite formations and natural textures created a striking backdrop for photographs that feel both editorial and connected to the Australian landscape.

This is where I love to bring my fine art background into wedding photography. Looking for interesting compositions, using the landscape and finding moments that feel more considered without losing the genuine connection between two people.

Kim and Dan embraced the experience, allowing us to create a series of portraits that move between quiet intimacy, playful character and dramatic composition.

Timeless Black and White

There is something particularly powerful about black-and-white photography when the composition, light and emotion are allowed to take centre stage.

The absence of colour draws attention to the shape of Kim’s dress, the textures of the trees and rocks, and the connection between the couple. One portrait captures them standing beneath the trees, while another creates a more artistic composition across the granite landscape.

These images have a timeless quality. They don’t rely on a passing trend, but on the relationship between light, form and the people within the frame.

For me, editorial wedding photography is not about making every image look the same. It’s about recognising when a moment or setting calls for something different, whether that is a quiet colour portrait or a dramatic black-and-white photograph.

A Wedding Full of Personality

Alongside the portraits, Kim and Dan’s wedding was full of personality and warmth.

Their adorable flower children, dressed in miniature formal outfits, brought an unmistakable charm to the day. These little details are part of what makes each wedding unique, and capturing those expressions, interactions and moments of character is an important part of the story.

After the ceremony, the couple gathered their guests for a large group photograph. With everyone together, the image captures the sheer joy and energy of the people who came to celebrate with them.

It is a photograph that feels alive. Hands raised, smiles everywhere and Kim and Dan at the centre of it all.

Handwritten Letters, Meaningful Connections

Kim and Dan also prepared handwritten letters for each of their guests, placed at their table settings for the beginning of the reception.

A gesture like this says something about the importance of their relationships. Rather than simply welcoming guests to the reception, they had taken the time to write something personal for each person.

A Darlington Estate Wedding to Remember

From the ring warming ceremony led by Andjelka to the drive into the bush for creative portraits, the day was shaped by thoughtful choices and a willingness to embrace something personal.

The result is a collection of photographs that moves between documentary storytelling and editorial portraiture. Images that capture the atmosphere of the celebration, the beauty of the surroundings and the connection between two people.
